Handmade gifts, by one person, in the Southern Highlands

A practical guide to picking a Stuga gift, from the bloke who makes it.

I sell at The Rocks Markets in Sydney most weekends, and the conversations I have at the stall are all roughly the same: "I'm buying for my dad / partner / mate, I have no idea what they'd like, help me out."

This page is that conversation, written down. No upsell. Just what I'd actually grab off the table if you told me who it was for.

Why a Stuga gift, the short version

It's actually handmade. Not "Australian brand made overseas." Every soap, brush, perfume, and balm is made by one person — me — in a workshop in Moss Vale. If you're giving something handmade, give something that's actually handmade.

Most of the perfumes are unisex. If you're buying for a man and you're nervous about picking a "men's" scent — relax. Phantom, Valhalla, Sakura, Azure, Horizon — all unisex. He'll wear them. So will she.

The 10ml Traveller is a real format. $30 for a full-strength 10ml. Two to three weeks of daily wear. Enough for them to actually fall in love with the scent before committing to a bigger bottle. Cheap enough to buy three.

Free shipping over $99. Free 3ml perfume sample in every order, no matter the size.

Gifting Dad — Father's Day & birthdays

For the dad who already has everything (because he probably doesn't have any of this)

Father's Day in Australia falls on the first Sunday of September. If you're buying for dad and you want something he won't already own, almost nothing in the standard gift-shop range fits the bill. Handmade Australian shaving gear and perfume do. Below are the three I hand to people at the markets when they say "it's for my dad and I don't know what to get him."

Pick 1 — The classic dad gift

A shaving kit. The Essentials Kit gets him started for $99; the Complete Shaving Kit ($249) is the no-shortcuts version with a hand-turned timber brush, safety razor, lathering bowl, and a proper puck of soap. He'll use it every morning.

Pick 2 — For the bearded dad

Beard Grooming Kit — $99. Beard oil, styling balm, a sandalwood comb and a caddy to hold it all. Scent-matched throughout. Made fresh in the workshop, not warehoused in bulk.

Pick 3 — If he wears perfume (or should)

Phantom 10ml — $30. Lime, sandalwood, black pepper. Clean, woody, easy to wear, and the one most blokes reach for who normally don't wear fragrance. Same recommendation in 30ml ($85) if you want to go bigger. Obsidian for the dad who prefers something dark and resinous.

Order a few business days before Father's Day to allow for dispatch. Gift-Wrapped option on the beard kit. Handwritten note on request — add it in the order comments at checkout.

Not sure what they'd like?

Three honest fall-back picks when you don't know their taste.

The 10ml Traveller — any of 18 scents, $30

My most-given gift, by a wide margin. It's a small bottle but it's not a sample — it's full-strength perfume in a proper 10ml glass spray, enough for a couple of weeks of daily wear. If you have any sense of what they might like — fresh, woody, floral, sweet — just scan the scent families guide and pick one. They'll know within a week if it's theirs.

Build a Kit — pick the pieces yourself

If you know they're into wet shaving, beard care, or you want to build something specific — the kit builder lets you pick a brush, a soap, a razor, a perfume, whatever you want, and we package it up. Good for personalised gifts where you want to choose every piece.

The Complete Shaving Kit — $249

If they shave, this is the gift. Hand-turned timber shaving brush, safety razor, lathering bowl, and a puck of artisan soap. It's the gift you give a bloke who already has too much stuff — because he probably hasn't ever owned a real one of these. The soap alone outlasts a year of canned foam.

What I'd grab for…

Real picks from the markets floor. If you've told me who it's for, this is what I'd hand you.

For the bloke who has everything

Phantom 10ml — $30

Lime, sandalwood, black pepper. Clean and woody, easy to wear, works in any setting. He won't already have it — nobody's ever already got a handmade Australian perfume — and it's the one I personally wear most days. See Phantom →

For her — universally loved

Sakura or Enigma 10ml — $30

Sakura is matcha, white tea, jasmine — fresh and grown-up, our top seller at markets. Enigma is passionfruit, vanilla, tonka bean — warm, addictive, the one people smell and immediately ask what is that? Either is a safe bet that doesn't feel safe. Sakura → or Enigma →

For a bearded mate

Beard Grooming Kit — $99

Beard oil, styling balm, wooden comb, and a caddy to hold it all. The kit covers his whole routine without the cheap-Amazon-bundle feel. Handmade oil, made fresh, properly scented. See the beard kit →

Romantic / anniversary

Desire 30ml — $85

Rose, jasmine, vanilla, sweet pea. Romance in a bottle without being saccharine — there's enough vanilla cream to keep it lush, enough jasmine to keep it grown-up. Date-night essential. See Desire →

For dad — Father's Day / birthday

A Shaving Kit, any size

Wet shaving is the gift dad probably wouldn't buy himself but uses every morning once he has it. The Essentials Kit ($99) gets him started; the Complete Kit ($249) is the no-shortcuts version. Both are real heirloom tools — the brushes last decades if he looks after them. Shaving range →

Hard-to-shop-for woman

Whisper or Royalty 10ml — $30

Whisper is peony, jasmine, citrus — soft, recognisable, easy to love. Royalty is saffron, jasmine, amber — the one people say smells expensive. Both are floral but neither is generic. Whisper → or Royalty →

Stocking filler / under $40

Artisan Shaving Soap or 10ml Perfume

$29 of properly-made shaving soap will outlast a year of supermarket foam — it's the cheapest gift on the table that still feels considered. The 10ml is the same. Real, full-strength, useful. Shaving Soap →
