The buyer's guide

Everything worth knowing before you choose.

What do you actually give groomsmen?

The default is a hip flask, a novelty sock, or something engraved that ends up in a drawer by the following Christmas. Everyone knows it and everyone buys it anyway, because the shopping happens late and the options are grim.

The test worth applying is simple. Will he still be using it in a year? A shaving kit passes, because he shaves on the morning of the wedding and most mornings after it. A beard kit passes for the same reason. A perfume passes if you pick something he would actually wear rather than something that smells like a wedding.

Beard or clean shaven?

Worth checking before you order, because it decides everything.

Clean shaven, or shaves around a beard, means a shaving kit. If he has never used a brush and soap, the kits with a stand and bowl give him the whole setup rather than one piece he has to build around.

Full beard means oil, balm and a comb. He is already maintaining it with something, and almost everyone is using a supermarket product they picked up once and never thought about again.

If you genuinely do not know, perfume works either way, and so does a gift card.

Is it worth engraving his name on it?

For a group gift, yes. When five men open the same box, the name is the thing that stops it being stock and makes it his.

The printing and engraving gear sits in the same room the products are made in, so it is not a separate job sent to a separate supplier. Send the list and every name is done the way that person spells it. Ask before you order and I will tell you what suits the piece you have picked.

What about the bridal party and the best man?

Every perfume in the range is unisex, which is the practical answer to a mixed bridal party. You pick one scent for everyone, or let each person have their own, and nobody gets handed something aimed at a gender they are not.

For the best man, the same logic as the rest of the party, just further up the range. If you want one gift that reads as more considered without a speech about it, that is what the larger kits are for.

How far ahead should I order?

Four to six weeks before the day for anything personalised, and longer for a big group, because the names are printed here and proofs go back and forth before anything is made.

Off the shelf, without names, it ships like any other order. The pressure only comes from personalisation, so if you are close to the date, say so when you get in touch and I will tell you honestly whether it is doable.
