Meet the maker

Hi, I’m Nicklas Levis—the person behind Stuga.

Stuga began with my parents in Hobart, Tasmania back in the 1980s. Today, I’ve carried it into a new chapter from my workshop in the NSW Southern Highlands, where I live with my wife and kids.

Before Stuga, I worked in corporate accounting—and before that, I served in both the Australian Army and Navy. That time shaped a lot of who I am today. It taught me discipline, patience, and how to keep pushing forward, all of which I bring into the workshop every day.

Design has always been part of my life. My father has a strong design background, and I grew up watching him and my grandfather in their woodwork and leather shops. I’m mostly self-taught, but their passion for handcrafted work left a deep impression on me. They showed me what it means to make something properly—with care, integrity, and a respect for materials.

With a Swedish mother and Scandinavian roots, I’ve always been drawn to design that’s simple, honest, and functional. That influence runs through everything I create—products that are beautiful, useful, and made to last.

I hand-blend, hand-cut, design and package everything myself, often keeping the first prototypes to see how ideas evolve over time. I use modern technology where it helps, but never lose sight of the human touch.

My favourite materials to work with are Huon Pine and high-quality vegetable tanned leathers. They’re not just beautiful—they age gracefully and carry a story over time.

For me, success isn’t about mass sales or hype. It’s hearing from someone who bought something years ago and still uses it, still loves it. It’s knowing that what I made has become part of their daily life—and held up, beautifully, over time.

Thanks for stopping by and supporting small-batch, handcrafted work. I hope you find something here that feels just right for you.
