What does alcohol-free perfume actually mean?

It means the fragrance is carried in something other than ethanol — in our case, either a light oil or a water-and-emulsifier base that still sprays.

Conventional perfume is mostly alcohol. It's there because it dissolves fragrance materials cleanly, evaporates fast enough to give a bright opening, and pushes the scent away from the skin. It's also the part that stings, dries and occasionally makes people itch.

Take the alcohol out and you keep the fragrance and lose the burn. What changes is behaviour: an alcohol-free fragrance sits closer to the skin and unfolds more slowly than the same scent in a spray. Read what alcohol-free perfume actually means for the longer version.

An alcohol-free spray, not just an oil

This is the part most brands don't do. Search for alcohol free perfume and you almost always get roll-on oils — because an oil is easy, and a spray without alcohol is not.

We make both. If you want the ritual of a spray, the even coverage over clothes and hair, and the ability to scent more than a wrist, the alcohol-free spray gives you that without the ethanol. If you want the closest, longest wear, the roll-on oil is still the better tool.

Both sit at the same 20–25% concentration as the eau de parfum sprays. Nothing is diluted to make it gentle.

Why does alcohol in perfume sting?

Ethanol is a solvent. On intact skin it evaporates before it does much, but it strips oil as it goes — which is why perfume can leave a patch feeling tight or dry, and why the same spray that's fine on Tuesday hurts on the morning you've just shaved.

On compromised skin — shaved, eczema-prone, sunburnt, freshly waxed — there's nothing to buffer it, and it burns. Alcohol also amplifies the alcohol-related flushing some people get, and can worsen dryness on skin already being treated for it.

If your reaction is to alcohol, an alcohol-free fragrance solves it entirely. If you react to a specific fragrance material, it won't — that's worth being honest about. Patch test on the inside of the elbow if you've had trouble before.

Does alcohol-free fragrance last as long?

On skin, it usually lasts longer — there's no alcohol evaporating and carrying the fragrance away in the first hour. What you lose is projection: alcohol-free scents are noticed by people near you rather than across a room.

For a lot of people that's the point. If you've ever been asked to wear less perfume in an office, or you want a fragrance that belongs to you rather than to the lift you're standing in, this is the format.

Non-alcoholic perfume for religious or medical reasons

Plenty of people avoid ethanol in cosmetics for reasons that have nothing to do with sensitive skin — observance, recovery, pregnancy, or a medication that makes alcohol on skin uncomfortable.

Alcohol-free perfume after shaving

This is the case we hear about most, and it's the one conventional fragrance handles worst. A freshly shaved neck has no intact barrier left — an alcohol spray on it is genuinely painful, and it's why a lot of people gave up on wearing fragrance before work.

An alcohol-free spray goes on straight after a shave without any of that. If you shave daily, it's the practical reason to switch formats rather than a nice-to-have.
