Australian Shave Oil — Handmade in the Southern Highlands

Stuga Shave Oil is a short blend of four oils — Australian sweet almond, Australian macadamia, apricot kernel and castor oil — built for wet shavers who want a cleaner shave without the razor burn. Use it as a pre-shave under lather or shave with it directly. Either way, a few drops is enough.

Handmade in small batches in the Southern Highlands of NSW. No synthetic fragrance, no fillers — just four oils doing four jobs.

Why Stuga Shave Oil

Most shave oils on the Australian market lean on essential oils for scent or stretch the blend with cheaper fillers. Ours doesn't. Four oils, each picked for a reason — and nothing else.

  • No synthetic fragrance. Sensitive skin reacts to what's added, not what's left out. Ours leaves it out.
  • Australian oils where possible. Sweet almond and macadamia from Australian growers — not the generic imported base most brands use.
  • Light enough for daily use. Apricot kernel keeps it from clogging the razor. A few drops is all you need.
  • Handmade by one person. Blended to order in the Southern Highlands, not mass-produced offshore.

The Four Oils

  • Australian Almond Oil — softens stubble and moisturises skin
  • Australian Macadamia Oil — rich in essential fatty acids, close to skin's own sebum
  • Apricot Kernel Oil — light, soothing, non-greasy
  • Castor Oil — gives slip and glide for a smoother blade path

Works equally well for face, neck, or head shaving. Suits all skin types — especially sensitive, dry, or coarse-stubble shavers.

How to Use Shave Oil

As a pre-shave oil: apply 3–5 drops to damp skin and massage in before lathering with shaving soap or cream. The oil sits on the skin, the lather sits on top, the blade glides through both.

As a standalone shave medium: apply more generously to clean, damp skin and shave directly with a sharp blade. Rinse the blade between strokes. Pat dry and follow with a light moisturiser.

For the full wet shaving routine, see How to Shave with a Safety Razor or How to Use Shave Oil.

Shave Oil FAQ

What does shave oil do?

Shave oil creates a barrier between the blade and the skin, adds glide so the razor doesn't drag, and softens the stubble so the blade cuts cleanly instead of tugging. Used before lather, it reduces razor burn and irritation — especially on sensitive skin and the neck.

How do you use shave oil?

Wash your face with warm water first. Apply 3–5 drops to damp skin and massage into the areas you're about to shave. Then lather with shaving soap on top, and shave as normal. Takes about fifteen seconds to add to your routine.

Pre-shave oil vs shave oil — what's the difference?

Same product, different job. "Pre-shave oil" means applying it under your lather as a prep layer. "Shave oil" as a standalone means shaving directly with the oil instead of using lather at all. Ours works for both. Which you choose is about the shave you want — pre-shave for a closer, protected traditional shave; standalone for a quick, minimal one.

Who benefits most from shave oil?

Anyone with sensitive skin, coarse or thick stubble, razor burn on the neck, or dry skin. Head shavers also find it helps navigate scalp contours. If you already get a great shave with just soap and a brush, you probably don't need it.

Does shave oil clog the razor?

A good shave oil shouldn't. Ours uses apricot kernel and castor oil in proportions that keep it light — a few drops is enough. If you see build-up, you're using too much.
