Beard Care Explained

Beard Care Explained

What each product does, why it matters, and how to use them together.

Why beard care matters

Most people assume beard care is cosmetic. It's not. The skin beneath your beard has fewer oil glands than your scalp but supports coarser hair. Without proper care, the skin dries out, the hair becomes brittle, and you get the itch and flaking that makes beards uncomfortable to live with.

A simple routine—washing correctly, applying oil, finishing with balm—takes three minutes and solves these problems. Your beard becomes softer, the skin stays healthy, and the whole thing looks intentional rather than neglected.

Washing

Regular shampoo strips oils from your scalp, where you have thousands of oil glands. Your face has far fewer. Using the same product leaves the skin underneath your beard dry and irritated.

A beard-specific wash cleanses without stripping. It removes dirt and buildup while preserving the natural oils your skin produces. This creates a healthy foundation for the products that follow.

Stuga Beard Wash Block

Our beard wash block

A solid wash bar with a hexagonal shape that sits well in your hand. Coconut oil base. Works on beard and head hair, making it practical for travel. Wash two to three times per week—daily washing, even with gentle products, strips too much.

Beard oil

Oil feeds the skin underneath your beard. This is where itch, flaking, and poor growth originate. The hair benefits too—oil absorbed at the follicle strengthens growth—but the primary purpose is skin health.

What's in ours

  • Australian sweet almond oil — lightweight, absorbs quickly, rich in vitamins A and E
  • Australian macadamia oil — closest to your skin's natural sebum, absorbs rapidly
  • Apricot kernel oil — softens coarse hair, reduces inflammation

How to use

Apply after washing or showering, when skin is clean and slightly damp. Use the pipette—two to four drops for short beards, five to eight for longer ones. Massage into the skin first, then work through the hair. The oil should absorb, not sit on top.

Beard balm

Balm works on the hair itself. It provides light hold for shaping, smooths the cuticle for a cleaner appearance, and creates a barrier that locks in the oil you applied underneath. Think of it as the finishing layer.

How to use

Wait two to three minutes after applying oil—let it absorb first. Take a small amount of balm (rice grain to pea size depending on beard length), warm it between your palms until pliable, then work through the outer hair. Comb to distribute evenly and set your shape.

Oil vs balm: Oil feeds the skin underneath. Balm controls the hair on top. They do different jobs and work best together.

Tools

Sandalwood comb

Plastic combs create static and have rough edges that snag hair. Wood doesn't. A sandalwood comb glides through without friction, distributes oil and balm evenly, and becomes better with use as it absorbs product over time. It also won't break in your pocket.

Grooming caddy

A 3D-printed holder that keeps your oil, balm, and comb together. When products are organised and visible, you're more likely to use them consistently. Small thing, but it matters for building a routine.

The routine

Daily (after showering)

Apply oil

Massage into skin underneath, then work through hair. Two to eight drops depending on length.

Wait

Give the oil two to three minutes to absorb before the next step.

Apply balm

Warm between palms, work through outer hair, focusing on shaping and controlling flyaways.

Comb

Distribute product evenly and set your shape. Store tools in the caddy for tomorrow.

Washing (two to three times per week)

Wet beard with warm water. Apply wash block directly or lather in hands. Massage into beard and skin underneath. Rinse thoroughly. Pat dry—don't rub. Follow with oil and balm while slightly damp.

Troubleshooting

Feels greasy

Using too much product. Reduce the amount—you can always add more.

Still dry or itchy

Oil isn't reaching the skin. Massage it in at the base, not just through the hair.

Balm won't spread

Not warm enough. Work it between your palms longer until fully pliable.

Patchy growth

Focus oil massage on thin areas to promote circulation. Results take two to three months.

On the wash block: It's sold separately because it lasts much longer than oil and balm. This way you're not replacing it every time you need a refill.
