The Wet Shaving Glossary
Every term explained. From DE to BBS to WTG — the complete A-Z for traditional shaving.
Wet shaving has its own vocabulary, much of it borrowed from forums and shorthand passed between generations. New shavers reading product reviews regularly encounter ATG, BBS, scuttle, and Astra SP in the same paragraph and need a translator. This is the translator — an A-Z reference for every term that comes up in traditional shaving.
Use the alphabetical nav below to jump to a letter. Maintained by Stuga, an Australian artisan shaving and perfume brand based in the Southern Highlands of NSW. If you're brand new, start with our in-depth guide to the double-edge safety razor.
A
Above the Tie
American boutique manufacturer of stainless-steel double-edge and single-edge razors known for precision tolerances and aggressive baseplate options.
AC Blade (Artist Club)
A single-edge blade format originated by Feather, used in shavette-style and dedicated single-edge razors. See also: SE.
Acquisition Disorder (AD)
Tongue-in-cheek term for the compulsion to keep buying gear. Common variants: soap AD, brush AD, razor AD, blade AD.
Adjustable Razor
A double-edge razor with a dial or mechanism that varies blade gap and exposure, letting the user tune aggressiveness on the fly.

Alum Block
A solid block of potassium alum rubbed on wet skin after shaving. Acts as a mild antiseptic and astringent, and reveals weak technique by stinging.

The angle between the razor handle and the face during a stroke. Roughly 30 degrees for most DE razors. See also: 30-degree angle.
Astra SP (Superior Platinum)
A Russian-made DE blade widely regarded as a benchmark all-rounder — smooth, moderately sharp, long-lasting.
ATG (Against the Grain)
A pass made in the opposite direction to hair growth, producing the closest result and the highest irritation risk. See also: WTG, XTG.
B
Backbone
A brush knot's resistance to bending under pressure. High-backbone knots scrub; low-backbone knots paint.
Badger
Animal hair used for traditional shaving brushes, prized for water retention. Graded from Pure through Silvertip.
BBS (Baby Butt Smooth)
The smoothest possible result — no detectable stubble in any direction. Usually requires a full ATG pass.
Beard Map

Best Badger
A mid-grade badger hair — softer than Pure, less dense than Super or Silvertip.
Bic Chrome
A Greek-made DE blade known for being smooth and moderately sharp, often recommended to newcomers.

Finishing the shave with cold water to close pores and reduce post-shave redness.
Croap
Portmanteau of cream and soap. A semi-soft consistency between the two. Loads quickly and lathers easily.
Cushion
The lather's ability to keep the blade from contacting skin too aggressively. Distinct from slickness.
D
DE (Double Edge)
A safety razor that uses a flat, two-sided replaceable blade. The dominant format in traditional shaving since the early 20th century.

Skin Barrier
The outermost lipid and cell layer of the skin. Repeated harsh shaves degrade it, leading to chronic irritation.
Slant Razor
A DE razor with a head that holds the blade at an angle, producing a slicing cut. Tames thick beards but punishes mistakes.
Slickness
How easily the blade glides over skin. A function of the soap's residual film, separate from cushion.
Soft Soap
A wetter, more pliable soap consistency. Loads onto the brush quickly and lathers with little effort.
SOTD (Shave of the Day)
A daily forum or social media post listing the gear used in that morning's shave. The hobby's social ritual.
Splay
How a brush knot fans out under pressure. Greater splay covers more area but reduces precision.

Strop
A leather strap used to realign and polish a straight razor's edge before each use.
Stropping
The act of drawing a straight razor across a strop. Done before every shave to maintain the edge.

Super-Lather
A lather built by mixing a shaving soap and a shaving cream together. Often combines the cushion of one with the slickness of the other.
Swirling
A circular motion used to build lather on the face or in a bowl. The default lathering technique for most shavers.
Synthetic
A brush knot made from man-made fibres. Modern synthetics rival or exceed badger in many users' opinions, with no ethical concerns.
T
Tabac
A German hard soap with a distinctive powdery-floral scent. A polarising classic with a long heritage.
Tallow Soap
A shaving soap built on rendered animal fat. Generally produces dense, slick lather with rich post-shave feel.

Three-Pass
A complete shave done in three passes — usually WTG, XTG, then ATG. The classic route to BBS.
Three-Piece Razor
A DE razor that disassembles into three parts: cap, baseplate, handle. Simpler and easier to clean than two-piece or butterfly designs.
Three-Band
A badger hair grade where each fibre shows three colour bands — light tip, dark middle, light base. Common in mid-grade and Super knots.
Traction
The grip a razor handle provides when wet. Important on slippery handles — many shavers prefer knurled or textured grips.
Traditional Shaver
A self-applied label for someone who shaves with a DE, SE, or straight razor and a brush-built lather, rather than cartridge or canned foam.
Travel Case
A small protective container for razor and blades during transit. Important because TSA and many airlines allow DE razors but not loaded blades in carry-on.
Triple-Milled
A soap that has been pressed and rolled three times during manufacture, producing a denser puck and longer life.
Tug
The brief catching sensation when a blade meets resistance from a thick patch of stubble. Different from pull, which is dragging without cutting.
Two-Band
A badger hair grade where each fibre shows two distinct colour bands. Often associated with Silvertip and high-end Super grades.
Two-Pass
A complete shave done in two passes — usually WTG followed by XTG or ATG. A common balance of closeness and skin comfort.
Two-Piece Razor
A DE razor where the baseplate is permanently attached to the handle, and only the cap unscrews to load a blade.
U
Unscented
A soap or aftershave with no added fragrance. Useful for sensitive skin or for those who wear cologne separately.
V
Vintage Razor

Voskhod
A Russian DE blade often described as smooth and moderately sharp. A common alternative to Astra SP.
W
Weeper
A tiny pinprick of blood on the surface of the skin after shaving — smaller than a nick. Usually stops on its own or with cold water.
Wet Shaver
A person who shaves using water-based lather and a traditional razor. The term is used to distinguish from cartridge and electric users.
Wilkinson Sword
A British blade brand. Modern Wilkinson DE blades vary by production country (German vs. Indian) and have a mixed reputation.
Williams
An American hard soap with a long history and a difficult reputation — cheap, but notoriously hard to lather. Frequently the subject of forum debates.
Witch Hazel
A plant-derived astringent used as a mild post-shave toner. Less aggressive than alcohol splashes.
Wolfman
A high-end Canadian boutique maker of stainless DE and SE razors with very long lead times and a cult following.
WTG (With the Grain)
A pass made in the same direction as hair growth. The safest, lowest-irritation pass and the foundation of every shave. See also: XTG, ATG.
XTG (Across the Grain)
A pass made perpendicular to hair growth, sitting between WTG and ATG in both closeness and irritation risk.
Yoghurt-Consistency Lather
The benchmark texture for a well-built lather: thick, glossy, holding peaks like Greek yoghurt rather than airy whipped cream.
