How to Use Your Shaving Set
How to Use Your Shaving Set
Everything you need for a proper lather and a clean, comfortable shave — from the box to your best morning routine.
Three things, made to work together.
Shaving Brush
Handmade, with either synthetic or badger bristle. It loads the soap and whips up the lather.
Wave Brush Stand
Holds the brush bristles-down so it drains and dries properly between shaves.
Artisan Shaving Soap
Handmade with coconut oil for a rich, slick lather. One puck lasts a long time.
Two kinds of brush. Both do the job well.
Your set ships with one of these — they just get to a great lather a little differently.
Ready to go out of the box. No break-in, dries fast, builds lather quickly. Low maintenance and a great everyday brush.
Holds more water and builds a richer lather. Give it a thorough warm rinse before the first use. It softens and gets better over time — a little shedding early on is normal.
From a hot face to a clean finish.
Prep
Shave straight after a hot shower, or wash your face well with warm water first. It softens the hair and opens the pores — it makes a real difference. Rinse your brush under warm water and shake off the excess. A badger brush likes a slightly longer soak.
Build your lather
Work the damp brush over the soap with firm back-and-forth strokes — not circular. Keep going 15–20 seconds until a thick lather forms. Add tiny amounts of water if it's too stiff; you're after a creamy, yoghurt-like consistency.
Synthetic brushes lather fast. Badger brushes take a touch longer but build thicker thanks to the water they hold. For the full technique, see the complete lathering guide.
Apply
Brush the lather onto your face in circular motions — this lifts the hairs and works the lather underneath them. Cover every area you're shaving; the soap is the slick barrier between blade and skin.
Shave
Whatever razor you use, this lather will improve the shave. Start with the grain, re-lather between passes, then go across or against the grain for a closer result. There's plenty in one lather for 2–3 full passes.
Finish
Rinse with cool water and pat dry. Follow with an aftershave balm or moisturiser if your skin likes it.
Look after it and it lasts for years.
- Rinse the brush thoroughly after every use — get all the lather out.
- Stand it bristles-down on the Wave stand so it drains and dries properly.
- Keep the soap somewhere dry between shaves — standing water shortens its life.
- Badger brushes need a more thorough rinse and dry slower; synthetic brushes just need a good shake.
Quick fixes.
Lather won't form
Not enough soap loaded, or too much water too early. Load more soap and work it longer before adding any water.
Lather disappears quickly
Spend more time building the base on the soap before you start adding water.
Badger brush feels stiff
Normal when new. It softens with use and proper soaking — give it a few weeks.
Not enough for multiple passes
Load more soap up front. Better to have too much lather than not enough.
