Collection: Woody Perfumes

Warm, grounding woods — sandalwood, cedarwood, oud, vetiver and tobacco leaf — hand-blended in small batches in the Southern Highlands, NSW. The end of the shelf people mean when they say "something that smells like a nice man." Worn by everyone.

Every woody perfume here is made at 20–25% concentration, roughly twice the strength of most designer eau de parfums, and comes in three formats: eau de parfum spray, alcohol-free spray, and roll-on perfume oil. From $35 for a 10ml Traveller, free shipping over $99.

Which woody perfume should you start with?

If you've never worn a woody fragrance, start with Sandalwood No. 413 — sandalwood, black pepper and lime peel. It's clean rather than heavy, it works twelve months of the year, and it's the one that suits almost anyone. That's the same answer we give across the table at markets, and it's right most of the time.

From there the shelf splits three ways:

  • Darker and heavierOud No. 401 (oudh wood, golden amber, leather) or Tobacco Leaf No. 407 (tobacco leaf, spiced plum, guaiac wood). Evening scents. They sit close and they last.
  • Drier and cleanerCedarwood No. 443 (cedarwood, aged patchouli, basil). The office woody. Polished, never loud.
  • Lighter and fresherFig No. 431 (wild fig, sea salt, vetiver). Woody with the windows open — best in warm weather, when the darker ones feel like too much.

What makes a perfume woody?

Woody perfumes are built on notes that come from bark, heartwood, roots and resins rather than flowers or fruit — sandalwood, cedar, oud, vetiver, patchouli and guaiac wood. It's one of the four major fragrance families, and the most enduring, because wood notes adapt to the weather in a way florals and citrus don't. Cedar stays crisp in summer. Sandalwood stays smooth. Oud stays magnetic regardless of the temperature.

The difference between a good woody perfume and a flat one is balance. Piling on wood notes gets you something that smells like a furniture shop. The blends here layer wood against spice, citrus, salt or fruit so the scent has somewhere to travel over the day.

Woody perfume for men and women

Every scent here is blended without a gender in mind. Woody has historically been marketed to men, which is why Sandalwood No. 413 and Oud No. 401 sit in the men's cologne doorway — but the warmth of sandalwood and the earthiness of vetiver read beautifully on anyone. Cinnamon No. 425 and White Musk No. 421 are the ones picked up most often by women at markets. If you want the wood with more sweetness behind it, Amber No. 235 sits one shelf across in Amber & Spice. Wear what you like.

Australian made, in small batches

These are blended by hand in a workshop in Moss Vale, NSW — not white-labelled, not decanted from someone else's juice. Small batches, filled and labelled here. The trade-off is that we keep a short register rather than seventy scents, and occasionally something sells out. The upside is 20–25% concentration at $35 for a 10ml, which is not a price most houses can hold.

Woody Perfumes

Woody Perfume — Handmade in Australia

Stuga's woody perfumes are hand-blended in small batches in our Southern Highlands workshop, built on warm, grounding notes — cedarwood, sandalwood, vetiver, oud, patchouli and mahogany. If you're drawn to a woody fragrance with real depth — dry, aromatic, earthy and long lasting — this is where to start. Every woody scent comes three ways: Eau de Parfum spray, alcohol-free spray, or roll-on perfume oil, blended at 20–25% concentration for all-day wear.

The woody range

  • Sandalwood No. 413 — Sandalwood, Black Pepper & Lime Peel. A crisp, modern woody perfume — clean and sharp.

  • Oud No. 401 — Oudh Wood, Golden Amber & Leather. Our darkest, richest oud fragrance, made for evening.

Sandalwood perfume, made in Australia

Sandalwood runs right through this family. Want it front and centre? Sandalwood No. 413 puts sandalwood under lime and black pepper — a sandalwood perfume for men in spirit that half our women customers wear anyway. Prefer it softened with saffron and something sweeter? That's Amber No. 235, over on our Amber & Spice shelf. Want the dry, resinous end of the shelf instead — cedar and aged patchouli with a green lift? Cedarwood No. 443. And for the darkest territory of all, oudh and leather, Oud No. 401. All of them come as a roll-on sandalwood perfume oil too — alcohol-free, close to the skin, from $35.

Buying a woody perfume as a gift

Woods are the classic gift for someone who "doesn't really wear perfume" — nothing here is loud or sweet. Buying blind for a man? Sandalwood No. 413 is the one we hand across the stall, and our Men's Cologne page walks you through the rest. For someone who wants a woody scent with polish for work, White Musk No. 421; for the person who wears black and likes to be noticed, Oud No. 401 or Tobacco Leaf No. 407.

What is a woody fragrance?

Woody perfumes are built on notes drawn from trees and roots — cedarwood, sandalwood, silver birch, vetiver, oud and dry aromatic woods — often warmed with amber, musk, resin and spice. They wear close to the skin, last well through the day, and suit anyone who prefers an earthy, grounded scent over something sweet or floral. Every Stuga woody perfume is unisex — a woody fragrance for men and women alike. Like your woods with more amber and spice? Cross over to Amber & Spice. Prefer to understand the notes first? Common questions

What are the best woody perfumes?

"Best" depends on how dark you want to go, so here's the honest ladder rather than a single answer.

  • Start hereSandalwood No. 413. Clean rather than heavy, works twelve months of the year, suits almost anyone. It's the one we hand across the table first, and it's right most of the time.
  • For the officeCedarwood No. 443. Dry cedar and aged patchouli. Polished, never loud.
  • For eveningOud No. 401 or Tobacco Leaf No. 407. The darkest things we make; they sit close and they last.
  • For warm weatherFig No. 431. Woody with the windows open, salt and vetiver underneath.

If you've never worn a woody fragrance, buy the 10ml Traveller of Sandalwood No. 413 first. $35 is a cheaper way to find out than a full bottle you don't reach for.

What is the best woody smelling cologne?

Cologne and perfume are the same thing here — the words describe strength and format, not who wears it. Of the woods, the ones men reach for most at markets are Sandalwood No. 413 for daily wear, Oud No. 401 when they want to be remembered, and Cedarwood No. 443 for work.

Worth knowing: a woody cologne blended at 20–25% behaves differently from a designer eau de toilette at 5–15%. It doesn't need reapplying at lunch, and one or two sprays is the correct dose rather than a starting point. The full men's doorway is on the Men's Cologne page.

Is woody fragrance good?

It's the most durable family in perfumery, and the most weather-proof. Wood notes adapt to temperature in a way florals and citrus don't — cedar stays crisp in summer, sandalwood stays smooth, oud stays magnetic regardless. That's why woody scents tend to become people's signature rather than their occasional bottle.

Where woods go wrong is balance. Pile on wood notes and you get something that smells like a furniture shop. Every blend here layers wood against spice, citrus, salt or fruit so the scent has somewhere to travel across the day. If you've tried a woody perfume before and found it flat or dry, that's usually what was missing.
