Woody Perfumes

Woody perfumes are built on notes drawn from trees and roots — cedarwood, sandalwood, silver birch, vetiver, oud and dry aromatic woods — often warmed with amber, musk, resin and spice. They wear close to the skin, last well through the day, and suit anyone who prefers an earthy, grounded scent over something sweet or floral.

It's one of the four major fragrance families, and the most enduring, because wood notes adapt to the weather in a way florals and citrus don't. Cedar stays crisp in summer. Sandalwood stays smooth. Oud stays magnetic regardless of the temperature.

"Woody" covers a lot of ground, and the modifier in front of it is usually what people actually mean. Here is the shelf sorted that way.

"Best" depends on how dark you want to go, so here's the honest ladder rather than a single answer.

• Start here — Sandalwood No. 413. Clean rather than heavy, works twelve months of the year, suits almost anyone. It's the one we hand across the table first, and it's right most of the time.
• For the office — Cedarwood No. 443. Dry cedar and aged patchouli. Polished, never loud.
• For evening — Oud No. 401 or Tobacco Leaf No. 407. The darkest things we make; they sit close and they last.
• For warm weather — Fig No. 431. Woody with the windows open, salt and vetiver underneath.

Sandalwood runs right through this family, and it's the note people ask for by name more than any other wood.

Want it front and centre? Sandalwood No. 413 puts sandalwood under lime and black pepper — a sandalwood perfume for men in spirit that half our women customers wear anyway. Woody spicy is the crossover people search for most after plain woody, and it's the warmest corner of this shelf. Spice gives wood a pulse; wood stops spice going shrill.

• Cinnamon No. 425 — cinnamon bark and pink pepper over mahogany. The most directly spiced thing we make, and a cold-weather scent.
• Tobacco Leaf No. 407 — tobacco leaf and spiced plum over guaiac wood, with clove and tonka underneath. Pipe tobacco rather than cigarette: sweet, dry and smoky.
• Sandalwood No. 413 — the gentlest version, with black pepper providing the bite instead of baking spice.

Cologne and perfume are the same thing here — the words describe strength and format, not who wears it. Of the woods, the ones men reach for most at markets are Sandalwood No. 413 for daily wear, Oud No. 401 when they want to be remembered, and Cedarwood No. 443 for work.

Worth knowing: a woody cologne blended at 20–25% behaves differently from a designer eau de toilette at 5–15%. It doesn't need reapplying at lunch, and one or two sprays is the correct dose rather than a starting point. The full men's doorway is on the Men's Cologne page.

It's the most durable family in perfumery, and the most weather-proof. Wood notes adapt to temperature in a way florals and citrus don't — which is why woody scents tend to become people's signature rather than their occasional bottle.

Where woods go wrong is balance. Pile on wood notes and you get something that smells like a furniture shop. Every blend here layers wood against spice, citrus, salt or fruit so the scent has somewhere to travel across the day. If you've tried a woody perfume before and found it flat or dry, that's usually what was missing.

Oud — agarwood — is resin formed inside a tree in response to infection. It's the most expensive raw material in perfumery, and it smells nothing like the sweet "oud" of supermarket body sprays.

Real oud is animalic, medicinal and slightly barnyard on first contact, then settles into something warm, leathery and deeply woody. It's polarising for about ten minutes and then usually wins. Woods are the classic gift for someone who "doesn't really wear perfume" — nothing here is loud or sweet.
