Beard Maintenance: The Simple Routine That Keeps Your Beard Looking Good
Most blokes either do nothing or go down a rabbit hole of fourteen products and a YouTube tutorial. Neither works. A good beard needs consistency, not complexity.
The Daily Routine
For a fuller walkthrough with photos of each step, see our 4 Steps to a Healthier Beard guide — same routine, with more detail on the oil application and combing technique.
Wash
Washing every day strips the natural oils your skin produces. Two or three times a week is enough for most beards. Use a proper Beard Wash Block — head shampoo is too harsh and leaves your beard dry and brittle.
Oil
This is the one step that makes the biggest difference. A few drops of Stuga Beard Oil worked into the skin underneath and through the hair. Do it after washing, or first thing in the morning. It softens coarse hair, stops the itch that drives most blokes mad, and keeps the skin underneath hydrated rather than flaking.
Comb
After oiling, run a Sandalwood Beard Comb through your beard. It detangles, distributes the oil evenly, and trains your hair to grow in the right direction over time. Sandalwood is worth it — it doesn't create static like cheap plastic does.
Style
If your beard needs hold or you want to shape it into place, use Stuga Beard Balm. A small amount goes a long way. Work it through with your fingers, then comb it into shape.
The Weekly Check
Once a week, take a closer look at your neckline and cheek line. These are what make a maintained beard look intentional rather than neglected. A quick trim keeps things clean without taking much off the length. Do it on dry hair — wet hair sits differently and you'll often cut more than you meant to.
Common Mistakes
- Skipping oil. This is what causes itchiness and coarse, unruly hair. It takes thirty seconds. Do it.
- Washing with regular shampoo. Head shampoo is formulated for scalp hair. It strips too much from your beard and the skin underneath.
- Using a cheap plastic comb. Moulded plastic combs have rough seams that snag and break hair. A proper comb makes a real difference.
- Trimming wet. Wet hair hangs longer than dry hair. Trim dry so you can see what you're actually working with.
