Tobacco Leaf No. 407 is a dark, sweet-smoky perfume built on three notes: tobacco leaf, spiced plum and guaiac wood. The tobacco is the cured leaf rather than the ashtray — dry, honeyed, faintly sweet, the smell of an old pipe tin before anything is lit. Spiced plum feeds it dark fruit and warm spice up top, and guaiac wood smoulders underneath with a resinous, campfire-smoke depth. Everything else in the blend — clove, patchouli, tonka bean, a lick of citrus peel — is there to hold those three up. Hand-blended in the Southern Highlands at 20–25% concentration, and it wears the same on anyone. The newest bottle in the register — No. 407, on the woods shelf.

The scent

It opens on dark fruit. Plum, but stewed rather than fresh — soft, jammy, wound through with warm baking spice and a bright twist of citrus peel that stops the sweetness from sitting heavy. For the first few minutes it reads almost like something out of a winter kitchen.

Then the tobacco arrives and the whole thing turns. Cured tobacco leaf is one of perfumery's great materials — dry and slightly sweet, hay-like, closer to honey and old leather than to smoke. Clove sharpens it with a dark, medicinal warmth, and patchouli lays down an earthy floor underneath. This is the part that reads unmistakably grown-up.

The base is where the smoke lives. Guaiac wood is a dense South American wood that smells like a fire that went out an hour ago — resinous, tarry, quietly smoky without ever turning acrid. Tonka bean rounds it off with an almond-and-hay sweetness that softens every edge. Hours later it is still there on a collar, low and warm and close to the skin.

Wear it with a coat on. Wear it to something that starts after dark. This is a tobacco perfume for anyone who wants weight and sweetness in the same bottle — the sort of scent people notice from across a table and remember afterwards.

When to wear

Tobacco Leaf No. 407 is built for cold air and low light — winter evenings, long dinners, the walk home afterwards. It projects hard for the first hour and then settles close, so it works as easily on a Tuesday under a jumper as it does on a night out.

Choose your format

One scent, your choice of format: a classic eau de parfum spray, an alcohol-free spray, and a roll-on perfume oil — and it wears just as naturally as a men's cologne or a women's perfume. Every format is blended at 20–25% perfume concentration — parfum strength, above most designer EDPs — which is what makes it a genuinely long-lasting tobacco perfume rather than one that vanishes by lunch.
