The Rocks Christmas Markets: December & Christmas in July
The Rocks Christmas markets.
The Christmas weekends are the biggest of the year at The Rocks, and I have worked them from behind a stall on George Street since 2016. When they run, what changes, how to shop them without getting carried down the street by the crowd, and the winter version in July.

When are The Rocks Christmas markets on?
The Rocks calls its Christmas season Homegrown Christmas. It starts in mid-November and runs through to Christmas Day. In 2025 that was Friday 14 November to Thursday 25 December. The 2026 dates go up on the official site closer to the season, and I will add them here when they do.
The market does not change its days for Christmas. It is still every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. What changes is everything around it.
What is on at Christmas.
The streets get dressed for it. In 2025 there was a seven-metre Christmas tree, a giant snow globe, free live music by the harbour in the Homegrown Concert Series, and a free laneway cinema showing Christmas films on weeknights. There are more than fifty places to eat and drink within a few minutes' walk.
At the market, the December weekends are the busiest and best of the year. The market usually trades into the evening, the lights come on, and George Street turns into something much closer to a night market. If you have only seen The Rocks at midday in the sun, come to one of these instead.
How to Christmas shop at The Rocks.
Come early in the season. The late December weekends are wonderful, but they are not a browsing environment. You get carried down the street. The first few weekends of the season have the decorations and the full stock, with room to stop and look.
Come at 10. Same rule as any weekend, only more so. The first hour is the quiet hour.
Tell the maker who it is for. Most stalls are run by the person who made what is on the table. We get asked to help choose a present constantly in December, and most of us are good at it.
Walk the whole length. The market does not put its best at the front. Plenty of people turn around too early and miss the half they would have liked.

2026 dates
10 to 19 July 2026, every day from 4pm to 11pm, free to walk in. The 2027 dates will go here once they are announced.
What it is like
Cold air, the harbour, mulled everything, and a market that feels completely different to its summer self. An underrated Sydney institution.
Make a weekend of it
The festival runs in the evenings and the weekend market runs 10am to 5pm, so a Saturday in the middle of it gives you both. Market in the day, festival at night.
Christmas presents, made by the person selling them.
Stuga is handmade grooming and perfume, made in a one-person studio in Moss Vale and driven up to George Street every weekend. The stall is the one place you can smell the whole perfume range in one go before choosing. If you are buying for someone else, this is the short version.

Christmas markets in Sydney, and where The Rocks fits.
Sydney has plenty of Christmas markets, and a lot of them are a single weekend or a single night. Turn up a week late and the street is empty.
The Rocks is different in two ways. It runs every weekend from mid-November through to Christmas, so you can plan around your diary rather than theirs. And it is on Sydney Harbour, between the Bridge and the Opera House, which is hard to beat on a warm December evening.
What it does not have is bargains. The stalls are makers and small producers, and the prices reflect that. You are paying for something you cannot buy anywhere else, from the person who made it.

The Rocks Christmas markets, answered.
When are The Rocks Christmas markets in 2026?
The Christmas season runs from mid-November to Christmas Day. In 2025 it ran 14 November to 25 December. The market trades every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through it. Check the official programme for the 2026 dates.
Are The Rocks Christmas markets open at night?
On the December weekends the market usually trades into the evening, and the street changes completely once the lights come on. Late trading nights change year to year, so check the official programme before you plan around one.
Are The Rocks Markets open on Christmas Day?
No. Christmas Day is one of the few days the market does not trade.
When is Christmas in July at The Rocks?
In 2026 it ran 10 to 19 July, every day from 4pm to 11pm, free entry. It sits alongside the normal weekend market, so a Saturday gives you both.
Are The Rocks Christmas markets free?
Yes. The market and the Christmas events in the street are free to walk in. You only pay for what you buy.
What can you buy at The Rocks Christmas markets?
Handmade and small batch gifts rather than imports. Jewellery, art and prints, ceramics, leather, homewares, skincare, soap, perfume, food and drink. Most stallholders made what they are selling.
When is the best time to go?
Opening time at 10am, and earlier in the season rather than the last weekend before Christmas. You get the decorations and the full stock without the crush.
How do I get to The Rocks Christmas markets?
Train, ferry or bus to Circular Quay, then a few minutes' walk. Driving into The Rocks on a December weekend is not something I would recommend.
