What Is White Musk? Where the Clean Skin Smell Comes From

Nearly every perfume you have ever liked has musk in the bottom of it, and almost nobody knows what musk is. The short version: musk used to come from an animal, it does not any more, and the clean, soft, skin-like smell we now call white musk is a small family of lab-made materials that perfumers use in nearly everything. I have five of them on the shelf.

Where musk came from

Real musk was a dark paste from a gland on the male musk deer. It smelt animal, sweet and a bit dirty, and it made perfume last. It was worth more than gold, the deer were hunted nearly to extinction, and it has been off the table for decades. Nothing in a modern bottle comes from a deer.

Chemists spent the twentieth century finding materials that did the same job. The ones that stuck were smoother and cleaner than the real thing, and that is where white musk comes from.

What white musk actually is

White musk is not one material. It is a group of related molecules, each with a slightly different feel. Some smell like clean laundry. Some smell like warm skin. Some are powdery, some are a little fruity. One of them, first made in the 1960s, ended up in so much soap and washing powder that it is now the smell most people mean when they say "clean".

The word white was a marketing choice from a British high street brand in the early 1980s, and it stuck because it is a good description. These musks are pale, soft and clean rather than dark and animal.

What does white musk smell like?

Skin after a shower. A warm cotton shirt. Something soft and slightly sweet that sits very close to you and is more of a feeling than a smell. On its own it is quiet. Under other notes it makes them rounder, warmer and longer lasting. If you have ever leaned in to smell someone and thought "they just smell nice", that was probably the musk.

Musk vs white musk

Musk on a label usually means the whole family, or a warmer, slightly animal style of it. White musk means the clean, laundry, skin-like end. Both are lab-made today. If you want soft and fresh, look for white musk. If you want something warmer and closer to the old deer-musk idea, look for a perfume that just says musk, or an amber.

How I use it

Musk is under almost every Stuga scent, in small amounts, doing the quiet work of making the base feel like skin. Florals get a soft musk so the flowers stay pretty instead of turning sharp. Woods get a warmer musk so they do not go dry. I use a mix of three or four, because a single musk on its own can smell flat and a blend of them smells like a person.
